China Fines Firms for Impersonating ChatGPT and DeepSeek Services
China's State Administration for Market Regulation has imposed fines on several companies for falsely advertising AI services under the ChatGPT and DeepSeek brands. The crackdown highlights Beijing's tightening oversight of the artificial intelligence sector.
Shanghai Shangyun Internet Technology was among the penalized firms, receiving a fine of 62,692.70 yuan ($9,034) for operating a fraudulent ChatGPT service on Tencent's WeChat platform. The regulator found the company knowingly misled users by claiming to offer OpenAI's official Chinese version of ChatGPT, violating anti-unfair competition laws.
Authorities also targeted copycat DeepSeek platforms that emerged in early 2025, penalizing them for trademark violations. The enforcement action underscores China's efforts to maintain order in its rapidly developing AI market.
